Everything you need to know about our group stay, eclipse viewing, and logistics in Tarifa, Spain
Booking & Policies
The packages are scheduled to surround the eclipse day on August 2, 2027, ensuring you are settled in:
- 4-Night Package: Check-in Saturday, July 31, 2027 | Check-out Wednesday, August 4, 2027
- 6-Night Package: Check-in Wednesday, July 28, 2027 | Check-out Tuesday, August 3, 2027
I made a friend who lives in Spain and is in the eclipse chaser community. Her name is Timi Trimmel, and she's already done a ton of legwork to secure these bookings for us. She'll be there in Spain, and is working on potentially organizing other shared activities, too. But please don't contact her directly -- she's already got enough to do!
In terms of financial protection, I'm collecting funds and keeping them in a dedicated account for tracking purposes. Because we must commit funds to the hotels to secure these exclusive rates, we highly recommend all guests purchase comprehensive travel insurance (including "Cancel For Any Reason" coverage) at the time of booking.
Once you submit your booking request, I will verify room availability and email you an official invoice with some terms. Venmo, PayPal, cash, or check work best. Please talk to me before sending payment. Let me know if you need to use some other format and we can figure it out.
In the highly unlikely event that Timi or the hotel cancels the coordination, all payments made to the group account will be fully refunded to guests. I have a contract with Timi, who has a contract with the hotels, guaranteeing our block reservation.
This is a booking for the hotel only. If I offer basically anything else, this whole thing becomes more legally complex than I want to deal with. I will say this: Plan on booking your transportation right away when it becomes available. Eclipse transportation sells out very quickly.
Two reasons:
- 1. Eclipse Totality Premium: Tarifa lies directly in the path of totality for the 2027 Solar Eclipse. It will be one of the most sought-after viewing locations in the world. Accommodation rates are naturally at a peak premium during summer anyway. Securing whole-venue buyouts this far in advance requires significant upfront hotel deposit commitments to guarantee our exclusive access.
- 2. To Protect Trevor: I've added a 10% markup to what Timi is charging, to protect myself from incidental surprises like:
- Currency exchange fluctuations
- Fees and exchange rate margins
- Payment platform skimming
- Attrition clauses
- The possibility of Tarifa instituting a Tourism tax
- Other stuff going wrong where nobody is at fault
Amenities & Comfort
No. But Tarifa is generally quite windy, so it's generally not necessary.
To ensure restful sleep for everyone, all three properties enforce strict quiet hours from 11:00 PM to 9:00 AM (23:00 to 09:00) in all communal areas, patios, and rooftops.
Yes. Not only is August an extremely busy tourist month for Tarifa, but the solar eclipse will likely draw far more people in -- possibly more than the town has ever experienced.
All three venues have free Wi-Fi, though some online reviews suggest it sometimes does not work. Strongly consider grabbing a travel SIM for your phone when you arrive.
All rooms include fresh linens & towels. It seems like there is a communal kitchen that we'll have access to.
Yes.
Logistics, Gear & Accessibility
Passport that is valid 6+ months from your departure from that country, and Spain will also be requiring an ETIAS.
We are keeping several plans so that we have the best chance of clear skies. We'll likely keep a path to go out into nature somewhere, and there's always Morocco if the weather looks better across the strait. Plus, we have a pretty awesome rooftop!
As historic Andalusian townhouses, none of our three venues have elevators. Rooms are accessible via stairwells and are spread across up to 3 floors. If you have mobility difficulties, heavy equipment, or prefer to avoid stairs, please let me know so I can prioritize placing you in a ground-floor room.
Double rooms are generally configured with either a double bed (Queen-size) or two single twin beds pushed together (a standard European double configuration). Single rooms are equipped with one single bed.
Probably not if you can avoid it. While driving in Spain is fine and highway systems are excellent, Tarifa will be overflowing during the eclipse week. Finding parking inside or near the historic old town will be extremely challenging, and secure public garages can get expensive. Unless you are planning day trips away from the coast, you will likely find it easier (and cheaper) to rely on airport shuttle transfers, local buses, and walking.
Our venues are located in Tarifa's historic old town, which consists of narrow streets and pedestrian-only zones. Private parking is not available on-site. However, guests can drive within 200 meters of the properties to unload luggage and gear. Secure, paid multi-story public parking garages are located just outside the old town walls (a 5-to-7-minute walk).
Local Life & Dining
All properties comply with Spanish building codes, featuring robust railings, gates, and safety features. However, due to the open-patio riad layouts, multiple levels, and rooftop viewing decks, children must be supervised by an adult at all times when using shared spaces, stairs, or terraces.
Tarifa's public health center (Centro de Salud) is located a 10-minute walk from the properties and offers 24-hour emergency medical services. English-speaking staff are typically on duty. A major regional hospital is located in Algeciras (a 25-minute drive). Multiple local pharmacies (farmacias) are nearby, including a rotating 24-hour pharmacy service.
Hostal Africa and Casa Africa maintain a quiet, relaxed boutique atmosphere, which is ideal for couples, families with children of all ages, and mature travelers. High Flyers Hostal has a slightly more social and active atmosphere, popular with active travelers and remote workers; please note that High Flyers accommodates guests aged 13 and older only. Quiet hours are strictly enforced across all properties.
Meals are not included in the packages. However, all three venues feature fully equipped guest kitchens. You can easily prepare your own breakfast or light meals. Additionally, all properties are surrounded by excellent local cafes.
